Paris, April 29th, 2020 - The jExcel library today announced the release of their new version 4. It was developed using financing provided by FDL, making it the first completion of an FDL sponsored project.

The jExcel library maintainer today announced the forthcoming release jExcelv4, also marking the completion of the first project sponsored by FDL. The financing was provided through a donation from Nexedi, which was looking for several key features to better intregrate jExcel within its ERP5 and OfficeJS applications. The new release of the open source version now includes support for multiple tabs/workbooks, colomn resize, remote updates via JSON, better cell highlighting and a host of additional features further bolstering its position as the goto solution for displaying spreadsheet data on the web.

Jean-Paul Smets, CEO of Nexedi: "We are very happy to see this update and project completed and have our staff already working on integration of the latest version of jExcel. The financing through FDL also demonstrates how companies can partially offset the cost of sponsoring the development of specific features in ubitiquous open source software solutions of general interest. This model has multiple winners: Open source software publishers receive vital financing to improve their solutions, while we as Nexedi benefit from key features being added to libraries we use every day. And as an open source library, these improvements are also made available to the wider public, increasing the usability for all Jexcel users. If other users of software followed this model, the open source and free software publisher ecosystem would greatly benefit as a whole. "

Sven Franck, CEO of FDL: "JExcel was a great first project to undertake and 'get our feets wet' in actually following through with the complete submission, committee validation and approval process of a project. We're very happy with the outcome and can only invite other companies to follow suit - we need a stronger ecosystem of open source software publishers in Europe and free and open source software is one area, where vehciles like FDL can make a difference for individual publishers, small and medium enterprises using open source software, and the European open source software publisher ecosystem in general."
